Who We Are

At Bay Area Children’s Theatre, we believe passionately in the power of theatre to enrich children’s lives.

Founded in 2004 by five arts educators with a dream, BACT has grown to become a major creative force in the Bay Area reaching over 125,000 children and adults each year. Our vision is for all Bay Area children to have the opportunity to experience live theatre before they finish elementary school.

The many benefits of experiencing live theatre include:

  • improving literacy and critical thinking
  • fostering creativity, empathy, and understanding
  • developing confidence and teamwork
  • encouraging civic engagement and lifelong arts appreciation

Our professional mainstage productions in Berkeley, San Francisco, and Sunnyvale introduce children to the joy of theatre and literature by bringing great children’s books to life onstage through productions created and performed by award-winning artists. Through a range of theatrical art forms including music, dance, puppetry, and drama, our shows inspire imagination, empathy, and critical thinking and provide shared artistic experiences that strengthen family bonds.

We are known for creating new plays that introduce young audiences to heroes and heroines in imaginary worlds and different cultures—plays like our award-winning musical adaptation of Grace Lin’s Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. Developing new work enables us to respond to the varied interests of the communities we serve and to enrich the canon of plays written for young audiences.

in school programming

Our community outreach programs strive to ensure every child has access to the arts by reaching as diverse and inclusive a community as possible. Student matinee performances provide subsidized and free field trip performances to over 30,000 students annually, and our touring productions performed at low-income elementary and middle schools reach over 35,000 students each school year.

Arts in schools programs help keep the arts alive in Bay Area schools by bringing arts educators into classrooms to provide drama workshops, in-depth teaching artist residencies, and professional development to support sustainable arts programming.

BACT’s theatre education program gives children ages 5 and up opportunities to learn the art and craft of theatre, gain performance skills, build self-confidence, and shine as part of a team. Our after-school classes and camps throughout the Bay Area range from introductory theatre experiences to full-scale productions.

Our specialty is “triple threat” musical theatre—singing, dancing and acting. We believe, and we tell parents, that theatre education prepares students for success in the world ahead. BACT students gain the skills and the confidence to stand tall, speak up and sing out. They learn what it takes to create an entire show. And—just as in sports—they participate in defining and achieving goals as a member of a well-trained, well-prepared team.

BACT teaching artists are highly regarded for their professional skills, their rapport with students of all backgrounds, and their emphasis on goal-setting, self-discipline, teamwork—and fun!

Theatre for the very young

Theatre for the Very Young (TVY) productions, Baby Rave, Play! and other early childhood programs provide multi-sensory story experiences that suit early development needs and engage children ages 6 months to 3 years and their caregivers in creative opportunities to play, sing, imagine, and act out stories together.
