Signature Performance with Special Guest Chelsea Clinton

Chelsea Clinton Visits BACT to See Her Book Come to Life Onstage

It was the start of Women’s History Month—the perfect moment for Chelsea Clinton to fly in for a special performance of She Persisted, the Musical, the smash-hit production BACT has created based on her best-selling book about American heroines.

A festive rainbow of balloons greeted Clinton and all the enthusiastic guests arriving at BACT’s Berkeley Theatre Center for the evening—a celebration for Founding Contributors to BACT’s Dare to Dream Fund.

The Dare to Dream Fund is our new fund for artistic and social outreach. It provides vital resources to expand the horizons of children and families, introducing them to amazing authors, artists and characters currently underrepresented in the world of children’s theatre (like the heroines featured in Chelsea’s stories) and encouraging everyone, everyone, to dream big.

As guests chatted and enjoyed sumptuous hors d’oeuvres (including a special buffet for the children)—all arranged by our amazing board member and Events chair Krysta Lapcevic and team—Chelsea and her illustrator Alexandra Boiger, whose glorious art inspired our set design, posed for photos with the happy families who had come to meet them and thank them for their work.

Then everyone gathered in the theatre to watch our spirited, all-female cast tell the story of Naomi, a fourth grader who travels through time to learn about the trials and achievements of courageous American women, like Harriet Tubman, Sonia Sotomayor, and Sally Ride.

Introducing a Q & A session with Chelsea after the show, BACT Executive Artistic Director Nina Meehan said, “Every child should be able to reap the rewards of exposure to live theatre. The Dare to Dream Fund is helping us achieve that vision by bringing school groups to shows like She Persisted, the Musical.”

Chelsea opened her remarks with high praise for our artists, saying, “They warmed my heart, even as they made me cry.” She then enthralled the audience with thoughtful answers to questions that children had submitted—everything from “Do you have a pet, like a dog or a horse?” from three-year-old Vivienne (Yes, she has a dog, who is 11 ½ years old and 'will live forever.') to deeper queries, like her motivation for writing her book.

Nina brought the evening to a triumphant close by inviting Chelsea and Alexandra to join the cast for a final bow, which the audience greeted with a standing ovation!

We extend special thanks to the sponsors and vendors who made our Dare to Dream Fund celebration such a success!
