Children’s Theatre Performance and Education Apprenticeship

Position Description
- The Apprentice will perform in a BACT Mainstage production as a member of the ensemble working alongside with a professional Director and actors.
- Assistant direct/teach two classes per semester as part of our Education Program. Apprentice will attend trainings prior to the class and work in teams alongside one of our experienced arts educators to produce a show with students varying in ages from 5 to 14. Class location TBD (up to 35 minute drive from central office).
- Understudy up to 2 roles for 3 BACT Mainstage shows. As an understudy, the apprentice will have guaranteed performances on some school day matinees.
- The Apprentice will be given the opportunity to perform as an understudy in student matinees of Mainstage productions throughout the season.
- Apprentice will attend rehearsals prior to opening and attend understudy rehearsals during the remainder of the run.
- The Apprentice will be given the opportunity to work as Assistant Stage Manager and run the backstage for a BACT Mainstage production. They will be trained by professional Stage Managers and work closely in the Production Management department.
- The Apprentice will be assigned to administrative tasks in the office and front of house duties for youth shows.
Training and Support
Throughout the Apprenticeship, apprentices will be assigned a staff member who will provide one-on-one mentorship. Apprentices will also attend monthly trainings taught by BACT staff and other Bay Area theatre professionals.
Time Commitment
The Performance and Education Apprenticeship is a full-time position that runs from August 15, 2015 until June 12th, 2016. Apprentices should maintain daytime and evening availability Monday-Friday, as well as some Saturday and Sunday performances.
Approximate Weekly Time Break Down (changes weekly):
Mainstage rehearsal/performances-12-16 hours/week
Assistant Teaching-6 hours/week
Understudy Rehearsals-8 hours/week
Administrative or Front of House work-10 hours/week
Qualifications
Minimum 2 years of college required or equivalent professional experience; Bachelor’s degree preferred. Theatre education and experience working with youth highly valued. A driver’s license and access to a car a must. MUST LOVE KIDS!
